Welcome back to "10 Hymns Every Christian Should Know", a series hosted by Clyde Copeland and Lindsay Fralick from Grand Parkway Baptist Church. In this episode, we explore the hymn "This Is My Father's World," written in the early 1900s by a Presbyterian pastor named Maltbie Davenport Babcock. Babcock was a well-rounded man who was both athletic and a musician, and he was known for saying he was "going out to see my father's world" when he went for walks.
The hymn was discovered in his belongings after his death. We discuss how the hymn celebrates God's creation and how being in nature can bring a sense of calm and remind us of God's control. The phrase "This Is My Father's World" can also shape our view of life's challenges, reminding us that God is in control of everything, even the small things. It provides a spiritual perspective that counters materialism and gives meaning to suffering and pain, driving our faith back to God.
The final verse offers a great reminder that "though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet" and that "the battle is not done" because Jesus will return to make all things right.
